NEW YORK (AP) — Lorrie Moore, Naomi Klein and the Egyptian writer Ahmed Naji are among the finalists for National Book Critics Circle awards. Honorary prizes are going to Judy Blume and to a longtime ally of Blume's in the fight against book bans, the American Library Association. On Thursday, the critics circle announced nominees in seven competitive categories, ranging from fiction to debut book to best translation. The other fiction nominees are Justin Torres' “Blackouts,” winner of the National Book Award last fall; Teju Cole's “Tremor,” Daniel Mason's “North Woods”; and Marie NDiaye's “Vengeance Is Mine,” translated from the French by Jordan Stump. The book critics circle, founded in 1974, consists of hundreds of reviewers and editors from around the country.

Amplats' shares were down 3.1% by 1130 GMT, having hit their lowest since early October 2020 earlier in the session. Amplats Chief Executive Officer Natascha Viljoen on Monday said South Africa's electricity crisis and the impact of Russia's invasion of Ukraine would lead to a decline in global PGM supply. Rising interest rates and a strong dollar typically result in lower prices for PGM, especially platinum, Amplats said. South Africa, the world's top PGM producer, is experiencing extended electricity cuts as coal-fired generating plants suffer frequent breakdowns, meaning Amplats's refined PGM output could fall by 5% in 2023, Viljoen said. Amplats declared a total dividend of 115 rand per share, down from 300 rand per share last year, returning $1.66 billion to shareholders.

The result is an uneven campaign that reinforces a sense the Emmy-winning series risks extending its reign too long. When Charles privately tells his mother in regard to Diana, “I’ve done as you asked, mummy. “The Crown” has been great, as the Emmy haul for its fourth season attests, and it’s still pretty good. Yet given the highs that the younger versions of these characters delivered, to borrow from the Queen, watching the current season feels more like a preference than a requirement. “The Crown” begins its fifth season November 9 on Netflix.
